    WELCOME TO SINGAPORE

From a British colonial outpost to a soaring modern city state, Singapore has a fascinating story to tell. Here a myriad of cultures live side by side, and in between the gleaming skyscrapers you can visit the traditional streets of the Chinese, Arab and Indian quarters, where the exotic atmosphere is a world apart. Shop everywhere from rickety markets to hi-tech malls, and eat everywhere from street-corner stalls to top-class hotel restaurants. Built on a beautiful harbour – be sure to explore the city from a different angle – jump on a traditional ‘bum boat’, that once took goods to the warehouses; or spoil yourself with a dinner cruise and marvel at the city night lights.

    GETTING AROUND

An efficient public transportation network of taxis, buses and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system ensures that getting around in Singapore is both convenient and hassle-free.

    CLIMATE

Singapore offers a tropical climate – with temperatures varying slightly between a minimum of 23oc to a maximum of 31oc.Rain falls throughout the year, with more consistent rain falling between November and January, which is classified as the monsoon season. Showers are sudden and heavy, but are also brief and refreshing.

    LANGUAGE

There are four official languages in Singapore: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English. English is the language of business, and is widely spoken and understood.

    WHAT TO WEAR

A year round warm and humid climate means that light summer clothing is best for everyday wear. A light sweater is advisable to cater for air-conditioned establishments and a waterproof jacket is recommended for the rainy season, between November and January.

    ELECTRICITY

The electric current is 220 – 240 volts AC (50 cycles). The power plugs used in Singapore are of the three-pin, square-shaped type so you will need to take an adapter.

    HEALTH

Generally, visitors do not require vaccinations unless coming from or passing through a designated contaminated area. Bottled mineral water is recommended.

    PASSPORT & VISA INFORMATION

Visitors to Singapore require a valid passport (which must be valid for at least six months after one has RETURNED to South Africa and feature a minimum of four blank pages).South African passport holders do not require a visa for a maximum stay of 1 month; but it is advisable to check with the relevant Embassy before departure.

    CURRENCY

The currency is the Singapore Dollar.US Dollars, Pounds and Euros are accepted at hotels.

    TIPPING

Tipping is not practiced as most hotels and restaurants in Singapore already levy a 10% service charge on customers' bills. Tipping is not a way of life in Singapore and is prohibited at the airport.

    TIME DIFFERENCE
